The Colony Room at New Langton Arts The Garage at New Langton Arts, 1246 Folsom Street, San Francisco Anne Colvin was invited by NLA to conceive the first project in the new Garage space, a 2,500 square foot addition to the organization's overall exhibition area. The Colony Room is a celebration of the legendary Colony Room Club, London Soho's notorious private drinking den. Situated at the top of a shabby staircase this down-at-heel but welcoming space has been a favorite haunt for British artists ever since it was started in 1948. The club was owned and run up until 1979 by the infamous free spirit, Muriel Belcher who paid the young Francis Bacon ten pounds a week and free drinks to bring in the clientele. He did, and Lucian Freud, Frank Auerbach and Henrietta Moraes were among the regulars. "Her genius was in the ability to mix members. This gave her club more variety and a touch of the unexpected not to be found in other clubs" (former club member). Anne hopes to follow in her footsteps. Anne Colvin's The Audition The first Mare Street Biennale will take place at the brand new project space and artists studios, Artistspace. The Mare Street Biennale is to be an annual event [sic] that will shadow the coming preparations for the 2012 Olympic events and is scheduled to anti-climax in summer 2012. This inaugural Mare Street Biennale begins by exploring urban myths and the bittersweet success of inner city regeneration through the gritty and sublime. It provides a unique opportunity to engage with local and global issues through their proximity and specifics of their cultural context. Artists include: Anne Colvin, Mark Cavioli, Alexander Flood, Jonathon Goslan, Le Gun, David Lindberg, Thersia Lynch, Rod Maclachlan, Mark Ross, Bob and Roberta Smith. Random past project: |
